He graduated from Springlake-Earth High School in
1958. The following year he met
Linda Fielden to whom he was married 34 years until her death in
1993. In 1965, he
moved
his family from Texas to a home and acreage he bought in Highfill,
Arkansas and
began
raising cattle. In addition to his cattle farming, he worked many jobs to
support his
family,
including hauling hog litter and building homes as he also expanded his
acreage,
remodeled
and enlarged his own home. Although quite busy, he always had time for fun
with
his family and his children have many good memories of their time with him and
their
mother. He and Linda became avid square dancers and they attended various
square
dance activities.
Following the death of his wife Linda, he vowed to never marry again. In 1994
he met
Norma,
another square dancer with the same vow to never marry again. They got
married
two years later and had another 27 wonderful years together. They enjoyed
square
dancing, traveling in their motorhome, and wintered in the Rio Grande Valley
for
13 years. His travels took him to all 50 states, Mexico, Canada
and the Maritimes Arctic
Circle,
the Caribbean and European countries along the Danube River.
Although no longer involved in calf roping competition, Leroy was active for
many years
in
the Highfill Raiders Roping Club. He served on the Highfill City Council, Highfill
Airport
Land Acquisition Board,
was an Elder and Chairman of the Board at First Christian
Church, Bentonville and
served on the Property Committee there. During the time they
lived
in the Rio Grande Valley, he was a member of Amigos de Los Ninos
de Mexico
(Friends of the Children
of Mexico), participating in their annual Christmas party and gifts
for
approximately 3,000 children in Progreso, Tamaulipas
Mexico.
